Shabbat Anthology, a Compendium of Best and Best-Loved Shabbat Music
Now Available from Transcontinental Music Publications

To meet the demand from congregations for new and different Shabbat music, Transcontinental Music Publications, the music-publishing arm of the Union for Reform Judaism, has released Shabbat Anthology Vol. 1, a compendium of 28 current and classic Shabbat songs.

Designed to complement the material Gates of Song, the official Reform songbook, Shabbat Anthology contains compositions by some of the best and most popular contemporary Jewish songwriters, including Michael Isaacson, Danny Maseng, Ben Steinberg, Steve Dropkin, and Bonia Shur. The book also contains older music not featured in Gates of Song, music that was previously available in “through-composed services or in eighteenth-generation photocopies of illegible manuscript,” says Joel N. Eglash, the Shabbat Anthology’s co-editor.

All pieces – with the exception of niggunim, or wordless songs – are arranged with both a written-out keyboard accompaniment and chords for guitar. In addition, the book features several solo adaptations of pieces that had previously only been arranged as choral works, with the composers themselves re-arranging their own pieces.

Shabbat Anthology, Vol. 1 is the first installment of an ongoing series of music for Shabbat. “Shabbat Anthology will serve as the vehicle for disseminating the best and most current Shabbat music, essentially making it a perpetually-updated supplement to Gates of Song,” Eglash says.

The book comes with a 28-track CD, with every composition performed by a noted Reform cantor or musician.

The Shabbat Anthology series can be ordered from Transcontinental Music’s Web site, www.TranscontinentalMusic.com, or by calling Transcontinental toll-free at (800) 455-5223, TMP@urj.org.

Transcontinental Music Publications is the music-publishing arm of the Union for Reform Judaism, the synagogue arm of the Reform Movement in North America. Uniting more than 1.5 million Reform Jews in 900 congregations across the United States and Canada, URJ programs and services include music and book publishing, adult education opportunities, outreach to unaffiliated and intermarried Jews, and the Religious Action Center in Washington, DC.
