"And Miriam the prophetess... took up a drum in her hand and all the women went out after her, with drumming and dancing." — Exodus 15:20
In this moment of redemption at the Sea of Reeds, a solitary drummer bursts into spontaneous song and dance, signaling her companions to take up their drums and join her in an act of gratitude and praise. So too the 13 new prayer melodies in this collection from Noam Katz, adapted from traditional morning and evening liturgy, are meant to inspire the listener to pray and play along, to combine the meditations of their heart with the rhythms of their fingertips. Somewhere between a worship service and a drum circle, between a heartbeat and a drumbeat, is the powerful intersection where prayer meets percussion. And Miriam the prophetess is there to guide the way, as each of us takes up... A DRUM IN HAND.

This ambitious second album by singer, song leader, composer, and Rabbi Noam Katz is a labor of love from across three continents (Africa, the Middle East, and the United States), including 12 songs in five languages (Hebrew, English, Luganda, Arabic, and Yiddish), and features guest musicians from around the globe. Influenced deeply by his stay among the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda in the winter of 2003-2004, Noam shares with us his heartfelt original songs, some based on liturgical texts. These strikingly beautiful and harmonious selections feature a lively mix of cross cultural sounds, exotic rhythms, and intricate harmonies.
