In April, 2009 Dan Nichols and his E18hteen bandmates Nathan Meckel and Mark Niemiec retreated for four days to the Timberwolf cabin nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains to celebrate their success. Dan describes it: “Mark and I had been talking about it for years: let’s get a cabin in the mountains and play music just for the sake of being together, making music, and laughing a lot. Our touring routine had so often become, fly to the gig, sound-check and rehearse (which is almost always one in the same), play the show, review the show while grabbing a quick bite, and then fly home. This usually all seems to happen within twenty-four hours. There’s rarely enough time for musical ideas to develop completely for the group as a whole. (But) in the midst of the Great Smoky Mountains, where our goal was to sit back and give ourselves a big pat on the back for work well done, we managed to record an entire album.”

To The Mountains is an anthology of twelve songs performed live—overdubs were used as sparingly as possible in order to maintain the live feel. The band played what felt good and recorded when the time felt right. The result is a collection of moments on the mountain, moments of celebration, redemption, release, meditation, prayer, and thanks.

This stunning new recording features new songs debuted by Dan at Hava Nashira 2009—“Get Up” and “Sweet As Honey”—as well as tunes like “Hoshia” that are already becoming classics in URJ camps and youth groups across North America. Hear what happened when Dan and the band went… To The Mountains.

My Jewish World: An Early Childhood Music Curriculum (Book/CD set)

Music can be a wonderfully effective teaching tool for preschool aged children. My Jewish World guides teachers through the process of introducing and utilizing song in the classroom to teach Jewish values.

In her comprehensive and easy to follow book, Judy Caplan Ginsburgh includes twenty-six songs, religious and secular, that will help to facilitate an environment of fun and learning. Each song addresses important Jewish concepts and many use Hebrew words and prayers. Judy provides comments, activities, and creative ideas, specific for each song, which can be used in the classroom to learn about being Jewish every day. The importance of saying the Sh'ma each morning, learning the Hebrew words for colors, understanding body parts, and the value of cooperation are only some of the Jewish concepts touched on in the book.

In addition, Judy Ginsburgh includes a list of suggested books for many of the topics. These books help to reinforce and expand the lessons laid out in the curriculum.

With a helpful glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms and the companion music CD, My Jewish World is a wonderful guide to making music significant in the Jewish classroom.
